Rainbow Sling

It’s been awhile since I blogged about my Hobby craft. My journey starting this year began with my search for The Rainbow. Looking out for beautiful coloured yarns, indulging in their colourful mix that helps calm my soul and give me inspirations which I seem to have lost out a lot on last year. Perhaps it’s the Rainbow colours of Hope, Love, Strength, Energy, Resilience etc… I am feeling physically much better lately.

Recently, I got my hands on a Big Skein of Rainbow Mixed Space Yarn. The yarn itself looked like a fine belt. It may even be mistaken as a really fine ribbon yarn. But it’s texture is really smooth and soft.

I decided to use it to make a new Rainbow Sling for my daughter who needed a new Sling bag to contain her personal belongings (mobile phone, purse, tissue pack etc) for her new school term.

I decided to play around with the use of the Basic Single Crochet stitch and the Spike Stitch crochet technique to create a crochet fabric texture that would be durable enough to contain the weight those personal items and also not having peep holes through the crocheted fabric to avoid having to sew on an inner cloth lining.

Working the strap was hard. I had to frog out my initial crocheted strap as it did not seem to fit into the idea I had for this pouch design. I wanted it to be pretty, sweet and dainty. Something that most girls would like to have. Thus after researching through my Crochet book of stitches, I decided to go with a belted Double Crochet Cluster strap look.

The Floral strap is really versatile. It can be sewn onto the pouch body which I did or side buttons can be sewn onto the pouch and then the long Floral strap can be looped through the buttons. Button loop method of attaching the Floral strap on will make the strap length adjustable to suit others’ preferences.

Next was working on the pouch flap cover. Working it all the way in the same Single Crochet stitch made it look really dull. Thus I decided to crochet a simple Doily with a Diameter that is wide enough to fit the opening of the pouch.

The Doily Flap had to be sewn on separately onto the pouch body using simple sewing thread. Making sure that the Doily Flap was well aligned was important as I needed the Ch-space to help serve as a Button loop for the sewn on button in the middle of the front of the pouch.

Planning, writing out the pattern, revising the design and crocheting it was not a process that I could hasten. I wanted it to be pretty. Something my daughter would be proud of and find it practical for her use too. Perhaps I may even consider adding it to my All Things Rainbow Collection for others to purchase and enjoy using it too. For the later, I am still not so sure about it.

Something I was sure about was that the whole process to completion reminded me that… I do not have to rush, all Handmade creations takes time, enjoy the slow journey for something good will always come around.
