Unity from Scraps

I have been back to hand sewing lately. Mmm…I am not ditching my sewing machine in this sense. But hand sewing does allow me to have better control when sewing around curves and narrowed edges. It takes more eye focus and fine motor control or otherwise I would risk getting prick and staining my pretty fabrics with little red blood spots. I sincerely find it extremely rewarding although it exceeds the time and efforts required for me to complete my Gift Projects.

From my collection of handicraft books and saved YouTube videos, I drew inspiration and used ideas from here and there to complete my Gift Project for this Nurses Day 2020. I wanted something that can represent my thoughts during this COVID-19 pandemic period. I hope we can all ride through this period safely.

What can represent these thoughts? I have been thinking about it more lately. Especially when I am cozy up in the humble comforts of my home with lots of craft materials stocked up to utilize displayed in my Hobby corner. They seem to be saying “Use me! Me first! You haven’t worked with me for a Long Long time already!!”( I enjoy stashing up on craft supplies..hobby hazard)

I happened to have a box of odd shaped cut fabric scraps. I didn’t keep those because I had a gift project in mind. I kept those more because I felt it was a little too wasteful to just throw them away. Little and odd shaped as they may seem but I always felt that they may serve a purpose someday if I needed that small extra piece to make up certain toy parts, use them to patch a hole in my fabric work or just because the fabric is too pretty to be thrown away.

Thus, I decided to make significant use of them for this year’s Nurses Day Gift Project. And I am really happy that these fabric scraps managed to make my Gift Project idea come true. Randomly selecting the various fabric scrap patterns to hand sew together onto the cotton batting and adding on a zipper . A creation composing of small scraps of cloth with different designs, colours and texture was completed.

The Unity Purse hand sewn together from insignificant fabric scraps was completed. I like that somehow the colours and patterns can be put together to create a different visual effect. Every single one made is unique on its own. One of a kind showing off it’s own theme. And as always, I hope the Nurses who will be receiving it this year will be delighted and stay united for those who need their dedicated care.
